You’re a Website Not A TV Network

It seems every other website you visit is coming across as their very own TV network. Okay perhaps not every other, but a good many are making this huge mistake in their web design. While they are piping the best graphics and sound into their web pages, visitors are hitting the back button in droves.

There seems to be one key element missing here and that’s what is getting web designers into trouble when they incorporate these TV like features in their web design. Your visitors aren’t watching TV and most don’t even have a high speed connection. So in essence, what you are doing is torturing your visitors, who are supposed to be your potential clients.

While those with high speed may not have a problem, the rest of the work is depending on a 28.8 kb per second download. Translated that means “slow.” On top of that, the majority of users are still only able to view 216 colors, which is a far cry from television color schemes.

There is really only one simple rule you should follow in your web design. After you have built your website, test it on a 28.8 connection. Remember you have around 5 seconds before your visitor wonders off somewhere else. Your web page should never be more than 50K and actually that’s really too large. Aim for 30K. The most popular sites out there all have a home page that is around 20K. Just look at Yahoo. Last time I checked it was around 19K.

Don’t be scared off by these small sizes. You can do an amazing amount with it providing you aren’t trying to be the newest television network. Keep your graphics images as little as you can, aiming for small than 4K, with 6K still being acceptable. Keep your colors to the web safe colors, which is 216 colors rather than millions. Remember the more colors you are using the larger your image file is going to be. Rely on design rather than graphics.

Your visitors will appreciate the thought that you put into your web design to keep the site loading quickly. Just remember your website really isn’t the latest TV Network so don’t treat it as such in your web design.
