The Wrong Way to Include Advertising on Your Site

Advertising on the web is a fact of life. All but the very biggest sites these days sell some of their web space to advertisers. It’s a great way to earn an income from your site, and can be useful to your visitors.

Some advertising though, is just plain offensive and invasive. It causes visitors to leave sites, and can give your site a bad reputation very quickly. Here are some of the worst offenders, in no particular order.

Animated Ads

Ads that flash, scroll, bounce, or otherwise move around on your page are one of the top offenders. They’re annoying and make it very difficult for your visitors to see, and concentrate on, what they came for – your content.

Pop ups

The mere fact that there are popup blockers out there says it all. Pop ups, and their close relatives, pop unders, are those windows that suddenly appear on top of content (in the case of the former) or lie in wait for you to close your browser (the latter) either one is distracting and annoying.

Interstitials

This one is a bit like slipping a flyer into a magazine – a user clicks to access content, and instead of being taken directly there, they first have to click through another page, with an advertisement on it, to reach the item of interest.

Takeovers

A recent development, takeovers may just be the worst thing that has happened in web advertising so far. These are the ads that suddenly appear, directly over content you are reading, and don’t disappear unless you click to close them. Slightly off centre on your click though, and you’re through to the advertisers site.

The bottom line with web advertising is to keep it unobtrusive, and make sure it’s not distracting or frustrating to deal with. Static ads, even with graphics are fine – it’s when you venture in the moving or appearing ads that there’s a problem.

Lastly, make sure that whatever advertising you do include on your site is for reputable products or services. Nothing ruins your reputation quicker than ads for dubious sites, products or services, or advertising that loads spyware on your visitors’ computers!
