Web design that focuses on the user is a winning proposition for both the design company and the user.

For the company providing web-design services, focus on the user means a sincere desire to satisfy the needs of the latter. Sometimes, basic human weakness on the part of a particular web designer assigned to do the job leads to a tendency to forget about what the user needs.

A good number of upstart designers look at themselves as high-caliber artists and experts in their field, and conclude that their ideas must be given preference over those of “outsiders”.

This is not surprising because, really, the nature of web design job is something one can be personally proud of. Programmers also have this attitude in view of the high level of self-esteem created by the tecnological nature of their work output which only a relatively small percentage of the total human population can produce.

Fortunately, web designers can be guided into the right of attitude of building sites for their users instead of for themselves.

Every web designer can be constantly reminded of the fact that he is not the user. Instead, he is the person who makes use of his technical knowledge to translate the needs and ideas of the user so that it will fit in the highly technical environment of the Internet.

There is a need — an obligation, actually — for the designer to focus on the user because the latter is typically one who has little or no technical background on the mechnics of web design and development.

Without the designer, the user is practically helpless. On the other hand, without the user, there is no reason for the designer to exist.

The ideal designer-user relationship is one wherein the designer encourages the user to express his/her needs fully, and be ready to show the user how Web technnology can be used to translate those needs into a design that fulfills the user’s purpose for building a website.

The designer can suggest a particular web design and explain to the user why the suggestion is being made. But he should get the user’s approval before implementing the suggested design.

Keeping the focus on the user can make him/her happy. A happy user can give good business to the web design company.
