White Space in Web Design
White space refers to any space on a page that isn’t taken up by text, graphics, or any other element. The term applies not only to web design, but also to newspapers, magazines, and anything that has a visual layout. In recent years, white space has proven valuable in making a website more attractive, navigable, and user-friendly. Here are some ways you can use white space on your pages to make a more effective website.
Draw attention to important areas. When your page is too crammed with pictures and text, it’s hard to focus on just one element. Pages like these aren’t very user-friendly. In fact, studies show that the more packed a page is, the less time the user spends on it. By using less material, the white space wraps around the area and makes the important elements more visible.
Direct the eye to certain areas. Because white space is basically empty space, a viewer’s eyes will naturally veer away from it. You can use this instinctive reaction to lead them to certain areas of your page. For example, if your sales pitch or Buy button is on the left side, putting more white space on the right gives you a higher click-through rate Instead of positioning your content on the white space, do the opposite and direct viewers’ attention where you want it.
Create a modern theme. Modern web design is all about simplicity. Websites that fall into the “modern” trend all make extensive use of white space, keeping only the most basic features on the page. This minimalist approach creates a cleaner, more relaxing layout that’s easy on the eyes. And because there are fewer things on the page, it loads much faster and makes the site more user-friendly.
Develop color contrast. High-contrast color themes are another feature of good web design. This is because contrast makes the text more readable and graphics easily pop out of the page. White space increases the contrast between the page background and your content,, making it stand out more and effectively grab your reader’s attention. Choose a background color than naturally clashes (in a positive way) with your graphics to make the white space more effective.
