Website Navigation

How easily are your viewers able to navigate through your website? Are they able to hop from one page to another without difficulty? Are they able to fully utilize the services that your website provides? These are just some of the things you should ask yourself to be able to determine the ease of navigation your website offers.

Some beginning web designers think that to be able for their website to be fully utilized, they should confuse the visitors with regard to navigation. Hence, the visitor is unable to go to other external links that would drive them away to a different site. However, trapping your visitors would greatly reduce the probability that they would return to your site, hence lessening site traffic.

It can be a very frustrating experience for your visitors. Just imagine yourself stuck in some webpage instead of being able to utilize your research time. Hence, it is necessary that a web designer masters this concept. There are two major concepts in website navigation: destination and location.

Destination is showing your visitor where to go. If you notice, websites have one homepage, and other “chapters” of their site are linked to this homepage. You will see the next pages available for the visitor to use. It is usually the list on one side of the page. These other pages also have links to subpages. You will notice that these links and subpages of the site are always located on the same part of the page. If the “contents” list in the homepage is on the left side, it will be the same for all pages.

The viewer must also know where he is, and on what part of the website the page he is viewing is linked to. You must be able to tell your visitor where he is. This is usually done by putting a linking line on the upper portion of the page. You will observe that some sites make use of breadcrumb trails. Also, telling the visitor where he is makes it easier for him to come back to a previous page or move further on.
