Make Your Website Easy to Navigate

When it comes to website design, less really is more, and the easier it is for visitors to your website to navigate around the various features and components that you have developed – the longer your visitors will stick around.  Keeping your website design simplistic in its form will make it easier for your visitors to use, and chances are they’ll visit you more frequently if you keep it simple.

How your customers navigate through your site should be one of your main concerns when designing or re-designing your website.  Make a sketch of the categories that your site will have.  Each category should have its own link or button in the navigation scheme of your website, but be careful not to overload your website with too many categories. More than eight main categories may overwhelm your visitors because they are being presented with too many choices.  You can make additional categories above eight into secondary navigation links if they are truly relevant to your site.

Deciding where to place your category section links or buttons is a big decision when attempting to make your website easy to navigate.  Check out popular websites that are similar to yours. Most websites feature a tabs links or buttons on either the left side or the top of the page.  Avoid expandable menus that fly out from a main button or link – these can be irritating and hard to click on.  A menu that descends from a button or link, make sure that it stays down the entire time the visitor is hovering over it to avoid the old “pin the tail on the donkey” regimen that some buttons have.

Once you have designed the navigation scheme for your website, make it consistent throughout your entire site.  All graphics and all text should have the same type of behavior.  Keep all text in the same font, even if you chance the font point.  Have a home button that leads back to home.  Making your site consistent from page to page will lead to longer visits by potential customers and client, which means more profit for you.
