Why is Web Standards Important?

A decade ago, starting a website was incredibly easy. The internet was merely a compilation of text documents that are linked by tags. Images were inserted occasionally to spice things but a little. But overall, everything was simple and it looked it. Web browsers were very lenient in interpreting HTML that almost anyone with basic knowledge can build a webpage from scratch. JavaScript were occasionally used but more sophisticated technologies such as Flash and DHTML were almost never seen. Back then, there was little need for standardization. The web has come a long way since then.

Establishing Web Standards – HTML and CSS

As the popularity of the internet grew, the visions of developers worldwide also became more ambitious. However, the real pressure to standardize the web came from browser companies. Each company developed its own markup tags that will only work for their product. Some tags widened the incompatibility among browsers. The problem became so widespread that a site that works for one browser may not necessarily work well on another. Thus, the need to establish web standards became a necessity.
HTML 4.0 and CSS-1 became the official web standards. For the first time, web developers were able to standardize their code by separating HTML content from the layout. Soon though, HTML became saturated because of hacks. Developers turned to XHTML 1.0 and DHTML. The newer versions of web browsers supported this language even better.

The important of having web standards is apparent when you look at emerging technologies. This is because at the time of tremendous technological growth, new inventions and innovations are created. To make sense of it all, the web needs to have certain standards that will serve as guides to these new technologies.

Who Establishes Web Standards?

The organization behind the web standard is W3 Consortium. However, an organized known as the ECMA established another standard. Currently, there are five officially recognized standards in the market. The W3C basically develops the specifications that enhance the web interoperability of internet-related products. The goal is to completely standardize the World Wide Web and derive its full benefits. Among the expected benefits are stability, reduction of development & maintenance requirements, backward compatibility, and search engine success.
