Web Safe Fonts – Part 3

In this article I now do descend in to discussing each of the web safe fonts in detail. May be this is the part many people have been waiting for as for me it looks like is the backbone of this topic. I have discussed what web safe fonts are, when should one use web safe fonts, why should web safe fonts be used, and who is supposed to use web safe fonts. Now I do urge my reader to come along as I descend in to the details of how to use each web safe font. This I do hope will clear any cob webs as well as give one the freedom to choose the web safe font he may want to use and use it well. I do hope this part will be of use to all the readers.

Serif Fonts

The art of designing the Web usually has many general guidelines which have taken hold as the Web has become more inherently rooted in Web 2.0 setting. There are many other articles which do discuss when one is to use serif and sans serif fonts, therefore, all I will say here is that, mostly, serifs are generally used mainly for headings. Below are the Web safe fonts that one can use for his serifs.

Font-family: ‘bookman old style’, serif;    bookman old style

Font-family: garamond, serif;    garamond

Font-family: georgia, serif;    georgia

Font-family: ‘palatino linotype’, ‘palatino’, palatino, serif;    palatino linotype, palatino

Font-family: ‘times new roman’, times, serif;    times new roman, times

Sans Serif Fonts

Sans serifs are ideally used for the bulk of the web site content.

Font-family: arial, ,helvetica sans-serif;    arial, helvetica

Font-family: ‘arial white’, gadget,sans-serif;    arial white, gadget

Font-family: impact, charcoal, sans-serif;    impact, charcoal

Font-family: ‘ms sans serif’, geneva, sans-serif;    ms sans serif, geneva

Font-family: ‘ms serif’, ‘new york’, sans-serif;    ms serif, new york

Font-family: ‘trebuchet ms’, halvetica, sans-serif;    trebuchet ms, halvetica

Font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;    herdana, geneva

Font-family: ‘lucida unicode’, ‘lucida grande’, sans-serif;    lucida  unicode, lucida grande

Font-family: tahoma, geneva, sans-serif;    tahoma, geneva

Monospace Fonts

Monospace fonts are usually useful when one wants to ensure all characters line up having exactly the same width. To display tabular data or code without having to use a table are some good uses for these fonts.

Font-family: courier, monospace;    courier

Font-family: ‘Courier New’, monospace, courier;    courier new, monospace

Font-family: ‘lucida console’, monospace, monaco;    lucida console, monospace

“Cursive” Fonts

At the moment, there aren’t many cursive fonts that are Web safe. There is a “cursive” fallback, just like sans-serif, monospace and serif, but for the most part this is not used frequently. There is some debate as to whether Comic Sans MS is a very compatible match to the cursive fallback font. Some people do think that Comic Sans MS does belong with sans serif fonts, while others do say it is the closest font to a normal “cursive”-like feel which one can currently get in a font that is Web safe.

In any case, Comic Sans MS and cursive are usually avoided. As for me, my opinion is that one should avoid altogether both of these.
Font-family: ‘comic sans ms’, cursive;    comic sans ms
