WEB DEVELOPMENT: MUST-INCLUDE TIPS – PART 1 OF 2

Over the years, web development industry practices have taught visitors to recognize certain standard features in various web sites and to expect to find these features in every site. Here are tips to ensure that your own web development efforts will address these practices and keep web site visitors’ expectations fulfilled.

Web Development Tip #1. The web site has a home page. In a majority of sites, the home page is the first page visitors encounter when they enter the site’s address (technically, a uniform resource locator or URL) in the address bar of the web browser.

The phrase “in a majority of sites” is mentioned because in a lesser number of websites, the first contact between the site and the visitor is a so-called “splash page”, usually a fancy one with visual effects and/or sound designed to impress the visitor of the site’s high-tech capability. The visitor gets to the home page only after clicking away from the splash page.

Like the lobby of a prestigious hotel, the home page must create a good first impression on the visitor. This can be done by creating a tasteful and appealing title design on the area that every visitor first sees, the top of the page.

While scanning the page from top to bottom, left to right, the visitor should know at a glance what the site contains. This can be achieved by presenting a sort of summarized table of contents — the main menu — either at the top of the page or at the left side bar, or both.

It is a good web development practice to put a “What’s New” (or equivalent) section on the home page. This part should be very interesting and must be updated at all times since it is the point that invites the user for repeat visits in the future.

Web Development Tip #2. Place a site map link on the home page. The site map is a sub-page that contains a logically arranged list of text links to all pages of the site. It is good for the visitor who is in a hurry to go directly to the inner pages of his/her choice by just scanning the list. It is also good for the search engine that silently and transparently scans the site periodically.
