WEB DESIGNS’ LINGUA FRANCA – THE EVOLUTION
A web page is defined as only a text file that is written in a language known as the Hypertext Markup Language. HTML in short, is considered to be the lingua franca of web design. This is due to the fact that Hypertext Markup Language provides the skeletal or basic structure of web pages and web designs.
Hypertext Markup Language was developed by a physicist by the name of Tim Berners-Lee. His aim was to develop a language that can be interpreted by computers within the network because of the fact that although computers within a geographical area are connected in a network there is no standard on how to view the files being shared through such network.
The following is the chronological order of the Hypertext Markup Languages’ versions and year of origin and use.
- HTML 1.0 (1989-1994) – the start of the first public version of Hypertext Markup Language which also lead to the advent of web page design. In this version, supports for text controls and inline images were included.
- HTML 2.0 (1995) – Considered to be the first version that can be supported by graphical browsers. It also debuted the inclusion of form elements such as the text box and option buttons.
- HTML 3.0(1996) – This was only a proposal to replace HTML 2.0 but was not widely accepted.
- HTML 3.2 (1997) – An upgrade from the previous version which now includes expanded options for form elements. It also allows creating and formatting tables.
- HTML 4.01 (1999) – to give control over web page lay-out this version allowed the support for Cascading Style Sheet. It also expanded featured for forms, tables and scripting ability.
- XHTML 1.0 (2001) – a revision of HTML 4.01 which now included the Extensible Markup Language (XML). XHTML includes the strictness of XML to set standards for a more stable web design and content.
- XHTML 1.1 (2002) – A minor revision that simplified writing extensions to the language.
- XHTML 2.0 (2004) – a web standard that is designed to eliminate the remaining design or presentation elements in HTML.
