Web Designs for The Color Blind
Studies show that approximately 0.5 percent females and 8 percent males have some degree of color blindness. This usually happens when the cells in the retina that recognize colors develop some abnormality. For any web design agency it would be extremely unwise to ignore people with this condition as it would mean forsaking an average of 1 out 20 Internet users.
If you are a business having website created for the promotion of your product or service you must question your web design expert’s skill in developing websites for the color-blind. Failure to do this may result in losing out on a lot of customers just because your message can not be read by them. Also, taking care of the needs of the disabled also puts your business in a good light and the website ranking on various search engines will also be increased if your website is accessible to all and sundry.
You must first educate yourself about the different types of color-blindness. The 2 colors that almost all color blind people are unable to recognize are red and green.
1. 11 out of 12 people that visit a website have a Trichromat vision which means a normal ability to recognize distinct colors.
2. Then there are the visitors that have an Anomalous Trichromat vision. These people can differentiate between the main 3 receptors (red, green and blue) with the only difference being that someone pigment is not aligned properly.
3. The people with Protanomlay and Protanopia vision have problems seeing red color.
4. Deuteranomlay or Deuteranopia vision means a person’s reduced ability or complete inability to see green color.
5. Tritanomaly or Tritanopia vision refers to the partial or complete inability to see blue color.
6. Dichromat vision means being able to see only 2 of the 3 main pigments and Monochromat vision means being able to see only one color.
Now due to the different levels and kinds of color blindness, it is extremely difficult to help a visitor who has this kind of impairment so do not be miffed if you are so told by your web design company. However, some means of getting around this problem are available and you can discuss these with the company before hiring them to design your website.
Firstly, you must remember that just because you are trying to facilitate the color blind visitors it does not mean a limited choice in the use of the color palette. You can use any color so long as you are careful with the combinations. Never try red and green together. Same goes for any variations of these 2 colors such as orange and purple.
Decide which is the most important part of your website’s content and ensure that you apply the above rule to at least those parts. Text and images that helps with navigating around the site and things like buttons, headers, menus etc should also follow the same rule. Raise the contrast level to a maximum making these either black and white or using totally opposite color saturations.
For those pieces of a copy that utilize large formats, it is imperative that the web design incorporates a dark color text on a white background. To make up for the dullness you could have the surrounding areas as colorful as you wish.
You can use online tools such as Vischeck to see what the website would look like to a color-blind person. Another good way of ensuring the web design is contrasted enough you could use a program such as Adobe Photoshop to see if the images still have some impact for the visually impaired.
Using these tips should guide you enough to help you chose a web design that will reach out to all people including the color blind.
