Web Design Turn-Offs

The don’ts of a web design that would likely cause one to lose viewers are:

1. Long sign up forms

Web based forms are a good way to collect viewer’s e-mail address, but visitors will likely to fill forms that are short and simple. If you require a form just to get onto your website then make sure to give readers a reward for filling out the form and enough preliminary information so that they have an incentive to take the time to do so.

2. Too many horizontal rules

Avoid solid horizontal bars like plague. If you need to separate content on one portion of the page from content on another, insert a graphic or more space.

3. Distracting animation

Avoid distracting and flashing animation, which makes the content difficult to read. Create animations that look great, get attention and then stop moving so that the viewers can focus on the material on the pages.

4. Too much on a page

Don’t overwhelm the home page with large graphics, banners or frames. It can take forever to download.

5. Too much scrolling

In order to ensure that the readers don’t have to scroll or resize their windows to read the pages, make sure that paragraphs or principle design group can be seen within an 800*600 screen. Scrolling from left to right should be avoided.

6. No contact information

It gives a greater credibility if the viewers can find you when they want to.

7. Dead end navigation

A common error is to let people navigate to a dead end by creating a page without access to a navigator bar or the previous page. Keep the viewers moving through the site by providing enticing links to the pages?

8. Rambling oversized text

Keep paragraphs short and sentence construction simple and leave eye resting white space between concepts?

9. Text that is hard to read

Don’t use type that is too small to read and background patterns that interfere with the text.
