Web Design – Let Us Talk About Navigation
As internet users search and browse the web, they then land on a page and navigate their way through a web site. Navigational system helps a site viewer to find their way around a certain page or site. It is important for a web design company to make a smooth navigation of a web site for its end-user. You can compare this with driving; will you be able to go to certain place without proper direction? For one to arrive at a certain destination there is need for the driver to know exactly where he/she is heading. Otherwise, they might end up driving in circles. When it comes to web site navigation, the designer must be able to direct its viewer exactly where they wanted to be. If a web site ends with poor navigation system, that site tends to lose its visitors within seconds of their stay. A navigation system must be simple and clear, as not all internet users are that patient.
The following are three major navigation types – Local, Global and Hierarchal.
An important fact about Local navigation, this works perfectly most especially when you are targeting cross traffic. With this, the use of embedded links that leads your web site visitor to information that is located in a different web site. If there is a need for you to link a different web site, you can use this code: target=”_blank” – this will them open a link using another window. In this way, your visitors won’t lose the path back to your site.
Most web design companies do use Global navigation for both small and medium sized web sites, in this way their main points of interest are categorized. While Hierarchical navigation pertains to large web sites (i.e. web directories, news portals, article directories, etc.). For many new internet users, this can be confusing. They end up getting lost, most especially if the navigational system is not that clear. The following are constantly omitted by some web designers, elements like “you are here”, “next page”, “back” and so on.
More often than not, most web design companies or designers use a mixture of said three navigational styles; it also depends on the size of a site, importance, and categories. However, as a rule, all web sites do posses a Global Navigational principle – this is the navigation bar. It is common to see a navigation bar on the top of the web page or on the left side. While, there are a few who places their navigation bar on the right side of the page – a lot of internet users are not accustomed to this kind of approach.
No matter how you create your web design, whether you place your navigational bar on top, left or right side, just ensure that it is simple and clear. For references, try to look at other web sites, and observe how they use the placement of their navigation bar.
Again, keeping your navigation simple and clear for your web design, will make your viewers enjoy their stay in your web site.
