Web Design Software – Which to Use, and for What?
There are literally thousands of products out there that relate in some way to web design. From graphics packages to FTP up loaders, the choices are almost endless, and with endless choices, it can be tricky to select the right packages. Here are a few key pointers when it comes to web design software:
WSIWYG
WSIWYG stands for “what you see is what you get.” This kind of software allows site designers to create sites directly, in real time, on their screens. As you build, you see exactly what your page will look like once uploaded.
Great for novices, and site owner builders, this is by far the simpler option when it comes to web design, and many ISP’s provide complimentary WSIWYG tools to site builders for that reason.
Html
Html editors are the trickier type of web design software. These packages require a knowledge of code, such as XML, html and PHP.
It is possible to learn this code, or copy and modify code to suit your site, but this type of software is frustrating to a first time user, and best left to the professionals!
For professionals only
These are sophisticated and powerful packages for web design, allowing almost unlimited options in terms of functionality and style. Used for portals including e commerce sites, the results are slick, but you need a high level of knowledge to use them!
Packages in this class include popular options like Adobe Dreamweaver and Netobjects Fusion.
Suitable for small businesses
These are easier to use packages, for small businesses and similar organizations, who use the software to create and maintain their own sites. Microsoft’s FrontPage would fall into this category, as well as similar packages.
Cheap and cheerful
The next broad group of software solutions are the cheap or free programs. While many of these cross over into one of the other two categories, they are grouped here because of cost, and often functionality.
These packages are designed to be extremely easy to use, and often, but not always, offer limited functionality.
NVU 1.0 and WordPress 2.0 are designed for this category, for website and blog development respectively, and are worth a look if your web design budget is tight.
Sitebuilders
The last, and by far the simplest option, are the sitebuilders. Often free, these are template-based packages that allow users to have a site “up and running” literally within minutes.
If this is the right option for you, there are lots of choices out there – try an internet search for “sitebuilder” and take your pick!
There you have it – web design software options for every budget and proficiency level. You can have a website – no matter what your situation!
