Web Design for People with Disabilities
December 30, 2008
By – Abraham Archangel, 123Triad Web Design & SEO Company
Tim Berners-Lee knew that accessibility will be one of the strongest and most distinctive features of the World Wide Web when he created the technology a decade ago. Whether people were from different geographical locations, cultural backgrounds or religious creeds, Internet users were expected to have equal access to the new medium.
However, in the early days of the World Wide Web, web designers failed to address the accessibility issues of people with disabilities. Early web design strategies failed to address the core audience of disabled Internet users because they were deemed insignificant as a small part of the Internet demographic.
This should not be the case. Businesses who are attentive of their online presence cannot afford to disregard niche markets because the Internet is freely available to anyone.
This is why if a business looking for an online presence, they should carefully look for a web design solutions provider which has measures and strategies in place to address the needs of Internet users with disabilities.
In 2002, evaluation-repair-transformation tools such as LIFT-Nielsen Norman Group Edition were released in the market to remind web designers of the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) accessibility guidelines while working on codes for web sites.
The accessibility guidelines did not come out of thin air. These were sourced from numerous studies of Internet users with disabilities – particularly those with vision or motor skill impairments. These evaluation-repair-transformation tools would be on the lookout for probable disability errors such as broken tables, images, cascading menus, scripts and even Javascript glitches.
However, considering the welfare of Internet users with disabilities should not be restricted to technical accessibility issues. It is still important to make sure that the browsing experience is pleasant for Internet users with disabilities. This is why more than any software advancements or technological development, nothing beats the human element of a web designer in creating considerate lay-outs.
