Web Design Mistakes: Splash Page
If you do the web design for you website yourself or if you hire a professional web design team to complete the site design for you, you need to be aware of some web design don’ts.
One such web design don’t is a splash screen. A splash screen is just one of the web design features you may want to avoid. The splash screen is the first page your visitor will see and generally consists of fluff and a lot of loading time. The splash screen is mostly for show and does nothing to provide your visitor with useful information about your site, what your site offers, or anything else that would be useful to your site visitor.
A flash splash page may be nice to look at for you, but does your site visitor really need or want to see? Many web design professionals agree that your visitors do not want splash screens. Generally, internet users are searching for information or products, not entertainment value when they come to your site.
Be your own judge on what your site is actually for or employ the consultation of a web design professional to help you decide. If your site is to entertain, you may still want to reconsider the option of a splash page. Having a splash screen makes it harder for the search engines to find your site when they are crawling the web finding matching keyword information.
Another downside to having a splash page to your site is that many users may still have slow internet connection or dial up. Because most splash screens take longer to load than normal homepages, the internet user may click out of your site because they believe all of the pages will take time to load.
Sometimes a splash screen IS important, but that does not mean it is necessary. Some splash screens are for adult content sites to warn visitors they must be 18 to enter, some splash screens allow users to choose country or language preferences, or the splash screen can serve other purposes that may be of use. There are ways around using a splash screen to point out the above information. The right web design professional can point you in the right direction and provide you with alternatives to splash screens.
