Web Design Mistake: Site Colors
Unless you have a vision disability your first thought when designing your website is not going to be color-blindness or sight disabilities. This should be a consideration, but often times it is overlooked. When you are considering the color of your site and font, you should also consider sight disabilities.
The aesthetics of your site should not be the only reason you choose certain colors for your site. You should also take into consideration vision impairments that numerous site visitors may have. Color blindness reportedly affects about 8% of the population. That is a lot of people that could potentially be customers of your site. You would lose these visitors if they were unable to properly “see” your site.
Ensure that the colors of your site have variations in lightness. This means the background color of your site and the font color of your site should have enough contrast so they do not blend together. This is a good rule of thumb for web design even if your site visitor does not have vision impairment. Even those who have good vision have a hard time reading text that is similar to the background color.
If you will be doing the web design of your site yourself, you may want to consider doing a little research on color blindness. Professional web designers have already completed this research and are well equipped to provide a web design for your site that is easily used by those with vision impairments. But, do-it-yourself web design is possible with the right amount of research.
Remember, just because your site looks pretty or nice does not mean it is effective or useful for all users. Consider 8% as a large number of the population and a large number of potential site visitors that you do not want to lose just because of the colors of your website.
