To make a simple website is not as difficult as it sounds. For non-technical people, it just turns out to be the simplest thing they never attempted to do. To make a simple website, there are five main issues to consider.

1.    Prepare the content to be placed in the website.
2.    Prepare the web pages layout.
3.    Put together the content using a text editor.
4.    Create the links.
5.    Upload the website.

A name for the website must be thought out. A web site’s name is what is referred to as the Domain Name. It takes the form of http://www.yourdomainname.com. The .com extension can be replaced with other forms depending on country, business nature, or website function. It is also important to remember that the name you choose might already be in use, just like a company name. To be sure it is available, use a search engine like Google to confirm availability of the chosen name. Register the name immediately if it is available, or get a local Internet Service Provider to register it for you.

Besides the name, the rest of the text that constitutes the content must also be written. Common word-processing applications such as Microsoft Word can be used to prepare such content. Arrange your content according to the specific topics they will appear under in the website. Advance classification saves time. Besides the text, images should be used to give the website a better retention capability. These can be transferred using a digital camera or from any other file, or just copied and pasted.

When determining the layout of web pages, several issues come into play. The font-size of the text, the length and width of the web page, the size of pictures, images and tables, the alignment and position of the text vis-à-vis the images, the number of columns and paragraphs to use, the number of pages, alignment, background color, links, headers and scroll options are just but some of those to be considered. Depending on the nature of the target audience, these aspects are considered in varying degrees. Children’s websites for example need more images than text.

The third stage of Web Design involves putting together the content. At this point, a text editor or a Web Design program is required. Many experienced designers prefer to use text editors such as HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). But for first-time web designers, there are several Web Design software programs that have simple interfaces and several similar functionalities just like your word-processing applications. You can easily copy and paste the content prepared earlier using the desired layout plan.

The pages are then connected or linked. Users will then be able to navigate from one page to the next. If the website consists only of one page, links may come in the form of anchors. Rather than scroll all the way down and back up to the specific reference points, anchors help browsers to move directly to the paragraphs below. This simplifies navigation and allows quick access.

At this point, your website is still residing in your computer and is inaccessible to the world. You now should identify a server or computer to upload it to. There are several free uploading utilities available on the Internet such as FTP (File Transfer Protocol) software. They are easy to use and come with instructions. You could opt to give the files to a local Internet Service Provider to upload them for you onto a server from which worldwide access will be possible.
