Web Design: Should You Go For the Latest Technologies?

Nowadays, there are several new and amazing features of DHTML, Ajax, and other web technologies.  Some web designers get carried away with their excitement and experiment with these cutting edge web technologies in building their site.  However, before you decide to do so, make sure it will be what’s best for your site.  Below, you can find some tips on how to determine whether or not you should use it.

Ask yourself whether it’s too much on a single page.  If your current design features flash, special effects, and other gizmos all on a single page, then it might be unnecessary and inefficient to add java applets and other additional features.  This could take up system memory from your visitors, and could possibly result into the crashing of their browsers.  As much as possible, limit your use of special effects to 1 a page.  This includes DHTML, music or video streaming, and Ajax applications, among others.

Will it serve a purpose?  Your design should not simply be something for aesthetics purposes, but also for functionality.  For example, if you want to use a rollover, you can do so in areas that wouldn’t normally be clicked on if it weren’t for any attention called to them.  This way, your fancy effects are serving a purpose other than aesthetics.  This will make your visitors appreciate it more.

Can it be done with an older technology?  Bear in mind that your visitors might not have computers or browsers that can support Ajax, Flash, or DHTML.  As much as possible, if the same effect can be achieved using an older technology, then stick with it.  Older technology will most likely be supported by the majority.

Will your design be compatible across browsers and computers?  So you’ve done the best you could do in designing a website in your computer, and viewed it using your favorite browser.  Reality check, not all visitors will view your website using the same browser as you are.  He or she could be using Firefox, Safari, IE, or Opera to view your site, and if your design is not supported by these browsers, your visitor wouldn’t be able to appreciate your design at all.
