The fast pace with which electronic shopping using E-Commerce is developing is to say the least astonishing. Considering that only two decades ago, we were so excited about basic interconnection of computers, many things that were only considered pipe dreams then have now become historical relics.

With technological advancements made every single day, we are now quick to abandon technologies that cannot fulfill certain aspects of transactions we considered marvels just years back. Speed, quality and security are now very evident hallmarks of our cravings than ever before.

Consider Amazon.com. There are books that will not be found anywhere in the country except at Amazon.com. Buying translates to ownership. You therefore don’t just pay for the book, but it is shipped to you. Any other online book vendor that cannot ship the product will be ignored instantly and cannot compete. Value added services are essential for business success on the Internet.

Quite interestingly, Amazon.com is known the world over for selling books. Amazon has flourished in previously uncharted territory. But one thing that brings people back to Amazon time and again is customer loyalty. Brand loyalty has been used in traditional business, but in the last few years, several online companies have learnt a thing or two about transforming their businesses online through this aspect of business. Any organization that promises more than can be delivered cannot stand the test of time and especially with a breed of impatient people like online customers.

E-commerce Web Design is a narrow road that essentially has four main high priority considerations: a big catalog, good pricing, user-friendly interface and light web pages. A big catalogue is like a big supermarket. The needs of a worldwide audience cannot be satisfied with the services of a kiosk. A wide variety of options ensures that there is a wide range of choices for the global market.

Pricing is important because businesses are in competition right from the production stage to the selling points. With a varying customer base that could include six billion people, and covering India that is known for its cheap labor to Germany that is known for its quality products, web designers have to be cautious of price implications. Sales can be made or lost only on the merit of price.

Interfaces also present a significant opportunity for Web Design experts because in many cases, it really does not matter how fancy or technologically advanced a website is if it is too difficult to navigate. Just as goods are laid out in a supermarket with price tags and labels, websites should provide appropriate guides for users to easily move around and search for things they need, and probably those they thought they did not need. And just as there are no restrictions to what the eye can see in a supermarket, the website interface should not block your online ‘view’.

Last but not least is the download speeds for items purchased. Using your ‘online basket’, one needs to quickly ‘pick’ and select other items of interest. If web pages are heavily laden with several kilobytes of content and images, this slows down onward progress. It can even arouse a feeling of insecurity to the extent that the user might not feel comfortable keying in credit card details to make the payments. It is therefore essential that during the design stage, factors relating to download speeds be given much thought.
In conclusion, it is important to note that these elements could change very fast. Tomorrow, new issues could arise and there could be a totally different set of considerations for E-Commerce web designers.
