Web Design – DHTML Pros and Cons
Dynamic HTML (dHTML) became the new buzzword a few years ago, when people started getting tired of static web pages. The term simply refers to new HTML tags, scripts, and elements that allow websites to be more interactive. On a dHTML site, users can drag items around, view animated content, and basically enjoy a better web experience.
It sounds pretty flashy, but is it really worth adapting for your site? Here are some of its pros and cons.
Pro: Fast loading
A dHTML page doesn’t reload at every click. Instead, it loads only the part of the content that’s supposed to change, such as the main text, a graphic, or the menu bar. So you can keep adding content and it won’t slow down the loading time—although it will still eat up bandwidth.
Pro: No plug-ins needed
DHTML makes use of built-in features on the browser, so compatibility is less of a problem. Users don’t have to download plug-ins or upgrade their browser to be able to view the site.
Pro: More features
Perhaps its most popular advantage is enabling designers to pack more content and features without weighing down the site. A dHTML site can be all interactive and jazzy, but still maintain a compact look that’s easy to work with.
Con: Costly HTML editing
Not all HTML editors are made to handle dHTML code. To build a dHTML page, you’ll most likely need advanced editors such as Fusion and Dreamweaver, which certainly don’t come cheap. Unless you’re making a sizable profit, it may not be worth the investment.
Con: Complex code
DHTML combines HTML with other languages such as CSS and JavaScript. Although a dHTML editor can do most of the work, there’s still a bit of hand coding involved. If you only know HTML, you’ll need at least a working knowledge of these languages.
Con: Browser compatibility
DHTML code may be read differently by different browsers. This is usually a problem between Internet Explorer and Netscape, especially with the lower versions. You may need to use two scripts on some elements to make sure they display on both browsers.
