Web design for cooking websites

The modern housewife, and men of course, have stopped using recipe books and most of them are turning online to find a big variety of cooking recipes. And if you want to create a successful cooking website, then there are a few things you should consider.

The design of the website should be self explanatory. User should immediately identify that they have entered the most delicious online cooking website. With that said, keep in mind that images are one of the most important elements in such websites. Having high quality images that display fancy dishes will make users to want to jump into the screen and eat them. That’s they key of your success.

Even if you offer the best recipes in the world, if they are not accompanied by a killer image, showing a mouth-watering dish, they will not attract as much users. Even medium recipes will get more hits if they have an amazing food image next to them.

When it comes to navigation, you should offer a menu that is unified in each page, by highlighting each subcategory the user is visiting, and try to be creative and smart while naming your categories and subcategories. Make it easy for people to browse amongst them. For example, have recipes categorized by region, like Mediterranean recipes, Asian recipes etc, by ingredients, like chicken recipes, spaghetti recipes etc, by calories, by time need to cook and so on. The options are numerous, but you must make careful use of them.

Use the homepage to promote and advertise all of your categories. Have a featured recipe box, a most viewed recipe, most rated etc. That way your users will know the highlights of your site immediately.

When it comes to decoration, it’s important to make it clear that this is a cooking website. Use graphics that represent objects from the kitchen, use your sense of humor and create mini graphics of food, like a mini slice of pizza, or fruit images, that you can use as bullet points. That way, you will give a happy tone to your website.

The design of a cooking website should be happy, cheerful. But don’t overdo it with filling it with elements and blocks of text. Don’t forget to maintain the balance within your elements and keep a good amount of whitespace to make it easy for your users to read your recipes. Don’t make it too busy. Also when it comes to colors, don’t use more than 3 colors. It’s good to use light colors but using lots of them will probably give eye strain to your users and will exit your site to find a more pleasing one.
