Is Your Web Design Compatible With More Than One Browser?
Most of us are familiar with the browser Internet Explorer, but did you know there are hundreds of different web browsers used around the world? And is your web design compatible with more than one browser?
Each browser uses the W3C document standards slightly differently. That means web designers have to struggle with these differences in their web design. Let’s look at how this will affect your web design.
When your web design is cross browser compatible it means it will display almost the same in each of the web browsers. The most common web browsers are Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Opera.
Each browser implements JavaScript, CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), and HTML slightly differently. These differences show your website differently at a cosmetic level. To make things even more complex the W3C standard will implement enhancements in a different way. And if that’s not enough different operating systems will display both graphics and text differently. Combine that with users who are using different computer, monitors, and different versions of the web browsers. It’s not surprising web designers get a migraine when they are working on web design. What’s the solution?
Of course, you’ll never achieve 100% compatibility across every browser that’s out there, but you can ensure your web design will work correctly on the most popular browsers. This is accomplished using very clean code, which follows the W3C standards. Because the popular browsers do a relatively good job of conforming to W3C standards you can expect fairly consistent results on these browsers.
HTML editors all handle HTML coding differently so unless you are writing the code from scratch you can have issues with your HTML. There are a variety of HTML editors on the market. Many feel that Dreamweaver is the best choice for compatibility across browsers, while FrontPage is the worst choice because it codes specific to Microsoft products including IE.
Style sheets, flash, and graphics may or may not display correctly. You can experiment by viewing your web design in different browsers. Even when you validate your code, your website may not be completely compatible with all browsers. The best thing to do is experiment a little with your web design to ensure you get the maximum value.
