Color is a combination of light and pigment. Pigment provides the variation in color by refracting light in such a way as to create different colors. The rainbow for example refracts white light when it passes through raindrops. Whereas most colors can be distinguished in nature, they all come from same foundation of red, blue and yellow. These are called primary colors. Combining any two of these colors produces secondary colors. When primary colors are further combined with a secondary color we obtain a tertiary color.
In the natural world however, objects use a subtractive color model. This called natural color. As primary colors combine, they approach black, or the absence of color. This color model constitutes the colors Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black denoted as CMYK.
Objects absorb light to reflect color back to the eye, the computer screen generates light. The result of this difference is a color model called additive color. It entails combining the three primary colors to produce light or white. Computers therefore use a color model known as RGB from red, green and blue light in the monitor.
An understanding of the basics of color theory can help in making knowledgeable color choices for a website design. Aside from background and text, colors must be chosen for the various states of links on the page and any navigational or decorative images on the site. A color scheme can set the tone for the website, support its theme, and provide navigational cues.
Whereas some people have a knack for creating a color scheme, others may struggle trying to find the best combination of colors. But this can be easy if the color spectrum is pictured as a wheel. From this wheel, several color schemes can be chosen.
Complementary colors, sometimes referred to as contrasting colors, are schemes created by choosing opposing colors from the color wheel. Orange and blue are complementary. To vary the colors further you can change the tints and the shades of the selected colors. These colors match well with the addition of a neutral color such as white or black.
Contrasting triad colors are fairly similar to the contrasting color scheme, but this option chooses colors that form a triangle in the color wheel. Blue, yellow and red form the most basic of contrasting triads. Orange, purple and green form a contrasting triad of secondary colors.
Analogous colors are shades chosen from the same section of the color wheel. To create an analogous scheme choose a color and then select one or two others that are closest to it on either side. If blue is chosen for example, the analogous colors to go with it will be green and purple.
Monochromatic colors comprise one hue in various values. Usually black and white are added to the scheme to provide contrast.
Graduation colors are an option that is similar to the monochromatic scheme but chooses a range of colors in a graduating pattern of hue, saturation and value. In this case you choose two or three colors next to each other on the color wheel and then change the saturation and value of the colors to transition smoothly from one to the next.
By and large, color is both visual and emotional. In as much as color brings a lot of beauty to a website, it can be of no consequence to blind or color blind users. This category of users has to be treated differently.
