Web design for children’s websites

When it comes to designing websites that the target group is children, the designers have a bit more freedom to be creative since kids like colorful and playful patterns. However, some things should be taken into consideration, since a website is still a website and the behavior of the online user is similar whether you are a child or a grown up.

There are certain things that you expect to see and that’s a navigation menu with the website’s categories, the content and the interaction, if any, of the design.

The color selection should consist of cheerful warm colors and usually green and yellow is considered a good choice. Always use the color wheel and be careful in the selection of colors. You don’t have to stick to a monochromatic color selection which is very common in corporate website designs with blue to be the dominant color. You can pick three colors and, according to some, even five are acceptable. However, be wise with the tones and shades of the color, to avoid creating high contrast graphics that might cause eye strain or make the users to lose their focus.

when it comes to the text and background color selection, make sure it’s easily read and keeping the standard black text on white background is always a winner’s choice.
the font should always be a sans-serif, such as Verdana or Helvetica, since are more easy to read, however you can use a serif one, like Georgia, for head titles since they can create a nice image-like title, that can nicely compliment the rest of the design.

Flash graphics are usually seen in children websites and that’s expected since the designer can create various fun mini games with flash. Nevertheless, you should be wise in the file size to avoid big loading times.

Even in designs that are targeted to children, the same basic design rules apply here as well. Although it’s recommended to use your imagination to create eye catchy graphics that will impress the younger users, make sure that the navigation method follows the user-friendly standards and provide them with an easily understood menu.

Ensure that there is an easy way to return to the main page and a good advice is to place in every page a link to the home page.

Use your imagination to design a cheerful environment for the younger audience, and make certain that your younger audience is provided with a user friendly and effective web site.
