Web design using Cascading Style Sheets

Cascading style sheets or simply CSS is a style sheet language that translates the formatting and look of a document written in a markup language. It is a style sheet language that is used for most web pages especially those written in HyperText Markup Language (HTML) and Extensible HyperText Markup Language (XHTML). Other web pages on which it can be applied are those written in the Extensible Markup Language (XML)

Its main purpose is to separate document content from document presentation. This also takes into account features such as colors, layouts and fonts. The whole purpose of this separation is to provide flexibility, reduce complexity and to improve the accessibility of the contents of the document. It also makes it possible for more than one web page to share formatting. Other features of the CSS style sheet language is that it can also permit a single mark up page document to be shown in different styles and to be utilized in different methods. For example, a single web page can present itself in different ways when it is printed out and when it is being used on a tactile device.

CSS is a very flexible style sheet language because a reader is able to use a totally different style sheet from the one that an author of a document specifies. For instance if the author of a web page links his or her document to the CSS style sheet, a reader is able to utilize a totally different style sheet to access the document from his or her computer.

The CSS uses English key words to specify the identifications of style properties. A list of rules makes up a style sheet. Each rule- set consists of a number of selectors and a declaration block. The declarations are in the form of a list of semicolons separated in braces. Further each declaration consists of value, a colon, a semi-colon and a property. It is a combination of all the above that make up the style sheet that is visible on our screens.

In instances where there is more than one rule applying to a particular element, CSS sets out a priority scheme which determines which style rule applies to a particular element. This it does by calculating the various priorities assigned to the rules. The results achieved are accurate enough to apply to corresponding rules. Specifications unique to CSS are kept in place by various browsers examples of which include the World Wide Web consortium (W3C) and the Internet media type.

Selectors belonging to CSS are what are used to declare the type of element a style is subjected to. These selectors apply to all elements which are a match to a specified attribute. Elements are matched in accordance to how they are positioned in the markup code or on how they are placed within the model of the document object. To achieve more flexibility within a style sheet, it is recommended that an author should combine one or more selectors together. This is especially so, when he or she is using the Cascading Style Sheet 2.1
