WEB DESIGN BELLS AND WHISTLES – PART 5/5
The idea of bells and whistles (B&W) was introduced in Part 1 of this series, where it also mentioned in passing some tools available to the designer for including web design B&W: CSS, Flash animation, regular videos, MP3 audio, and classic GIF animation.
Parts 2 to 4 were devoted to CSS because it is simple to use, closely related with HTML, does not require external software, and is power-packed. To know more about CSS, get a copy of a good book on Cascading Style Sheets in the market.
We conclude this series by briefly discussing the rest of the B&W tools we have enumerated.
Web Design B&W Tool #2 – Flash Animation
“Flash” is a brand of commercial software originally developed and marketed by Macromedia and now owned by Adobe Systems. The software is a tool for developing and publishing animated graphics that has come to be known as Flash animation, which is more sophisticated than its predecessor, GIF animation.
Web Design B&W Tool #3 – Regular Video
By “regular video” we mean video that is originally packaged in a standard format like MPEG and subsequently converted into a Web-suitable format like FLV (Flash video).
One of the most popular web sites that publish FLV videos is YouTube, which is owned by Google.
You can upload your own video on YouTube and embed it in your site.
Web Design B&W Tool #4 – MP3 Audio
MP3 is an audio compression format in which popular music, audio books, and other recorded sounds are stored.
If appropriate for your design project, you can include carefully selected MP3 music on your home page and other pages to complement the overall content of the site.
Web Design B&W Tool #5 – Animated GIFs
Back in the 1990s when the Web was young, the prevalent motion graphics people find on web sites were animated GIFs.
Originated in the 1980s by CompuServe, GIF (graphics interchange format) is a bitmap graphics format that became popular because it was portable and can support animations. Animated GIF is a series of pictures arranged like frames in a movie film in such a way that when run on a viewer at a certain speed, it creates the illusion of motion.
It is a good alternative to consider.
