WEB DESIGN BELLS AND WHISTLES - PART 4/5

In this series, we introduced bells and whistles (B&W) in web design in Part 1. Then we began exploring CSS (one of the web design B&W tools) in Part 2 and continued the discussion all the way to Part 3.

In this part of the series we cover more of CSS.

Web Design B&W Tool #1 - Cascading Style Sheets (continued from Part 3)
In Parts 2 and 3, we described CSS-based B&W in terms of page colors, borders, and headings.

Now let’s talk about paragraphs.

* Paragraphs: The focal point of the web design effort is the content you place in a web page. In a majority of cases, content comes in the form of an article, an organized informative piece presented in narrative form. At the heart of the article is a unified set of paragraphs.

With HTML, an English paragraph flows from the left edge of its container to the right edge, automatically wrapping to one or more new lines if it is longer than the horizontal space of the container.

The container can be the browser itself if the paragraph is written inside the tag of the HTML page. Alternatively, the container can be a frame, if the page is organized as a frameset, or it can be a cell in an HTML table.

In HTML, the dimensions of the container determines the flow of the paragraph.

With CSS, paragraph flow is within the control of the web design creator, you. How can you do it with CSS? You simply have to define a style for the paragraph wherein you specify the width in a measurement unit of your choice. Measurement comes in many flavors: percentage (%), em, inch (in), point (pt), pixel (px), and more.

Once you have specified a width, the paragraph obediently flows within its confines.

And here’s more good news. You can use measurement not only for specifying paragraph width but also anywhere else measurement is needed, such as positioning, margins, and padding!

What else can you do to a paragraph with CSS?

You can control the spacing of text lines within the paragraph, spacing between words, and spacing between individual characters within a word.

With these capabilities, you can achieve B&W merely by varying the presentation of paragraphs in the page.
