WEB DESIGN BELLS AND WHISTLES – PART 3/5

We described bells and whistles (B&W) in web design in Part 1 of this series and enumerated some of the tools available to the designer to make B&W come alive in web pages. Part 2 expanded on what was introduced in Part 1 by exploring possibilities provided by the first tool mentioned, CSS.

Here in Part 3 we add more to what we covered about CSS before moving on to other web design B&W tools.

Web Design B&W Tool #1 – Cascading Style Sheets (continued from Part 2)
We saw in Part 2 the numerous CSS options for coloring up a web page that were not possible with HTML alone. Then we described borders as another alternative for improving the look of the page.

Now we tackle headings.

* Headings: With pure HTML, you were somewhat forced to abide by the default font face and size that it provided each time you used one of the heading tags from <H1> to <H6>. But CSS changed all that. You are now very much in control of headings in far greater number of ways.

You have a choice of font faces in your web design. You can control the font size of each heading level with the precision of a fraction of an em (one of the measuring units available to you). For example, if we take the default font size of your web browser as 1 em, you can specify gradual font sizes of your headings as follows (you can make your own!): 1.2 em (20% larger than default) for H6 to 2.0 em (twice larger than default) for H1.

Here’s more. If you want, you can control the font color of each heading level, the font weight (e.g., bold), the font style (e.g., italic), the font stretch (e.g., condensed), the font size (e.g., xx-large).

In HTML, you can’t have a background color for your headings. In CSS, you can. The color options that are available for fonts are available for the heading background.

We emphasize headings because in classic, purely HTML-based web design, the designers opted to use graphical text in place of real headings each time they wanted good-looking headings. This approach was good for site visitors but bad for search engine optimization (SEO).
