WEB DESIGN BELLS AND WHISTLES – PART 1/3

Computer programmers are fond of showcasing bells and whistles in software they produce.

They love it, and are willing to fight for it if necessary — it’s their trademark! But so are web design artists.

Bells and whistles? We don’t know where the phrase really comes from; certainly not from the software design world nor from the web design world. Back in the old days of rural America, a bystander can look from a distance at a picturesque scene of a steam powered train running smoothly on railroad tracks against a backdrop of green mountains and blue skies. By itself, the sight is a wonderful experience. But the warning bells and whistles from the train puts an added dimension to the experience.

The locomotives of old could still be locomotives without the bells and whistles, just like modern commercial aircraft could still be aircraft without on-board movies. But the locomotives that had bells and whistles had some edge over those that did not; ditto for commercial airlines.

In other words, bells and whistles are non-essentials. But they do add attractive pull, at least on the surface, where they are used.

A web site rolled out from the handiwork of the web design profession could still be a web site without its equivalent of bells and whistles. But like the ancient locomotives, the web site that figuratively clanged and tooted drew more attention than one that ran shyly, assuming that both function exactly the same way.

Certainly, the phrase “bells and whistles” is not exclusively used by software development guys or by web design guys, but by everybody. For products or services like software and web sites, “bells and whistles” are features that go beyond function: astounding graphics, riveting videos, heavenly sounds.

There are tools available for the web design trade that make inclusion of bells and whistles easier: cascading style sheets (CSS); the most talked-about phenomenon in town — Flash animation; regular videos via YouTube embedding or linking; MP3 audio; classic GIF animation (is it still around?).

The Web is a very competitive environment. There are millions of web sites out there, vying for attention from over a billion users. Many of these sites have similar services, so the need to stand out in a crowded room is ever present.

Enter bells and whistles.
