Web Design Basic Guidelines

When working on web design, many people go crazy and exhaust their creativity in designing elaborate pages with large images, flashy animations, extravagant fonts, and crazy layouts.  Although it might look good to you, it might not be appealing to the people that matters most – your audience.

As much as possible, you want your website to appear clean and organized, but still with a touch of color and style.  One has to strike a balance to make sure that your website is not too plain and boring, but not too gaudy and irritating to look at.

When it comes to graphics, stick to small images that go from 10 to 12 KB.  Large images tend to take a long time to load, and most people are too impatient to wait for websites to load.  Chances are, you’ll lose your visitors even before they’ve seen your site.  Avoid huge graphics and optimize your images to make sure your page loads faster.

Forgo the use of blinking images.  As much as possible, use static images instead of rotating, changing, moving, or flashing ones.  If you really have to, at least use them sparingly and appropriately.  Having too many dynamic images can be annoying to watch, and could take a longer time to load.

The font is also something you have to consider.  As much as possible, stick to Sans-Serif fonts for your text.  Serif fonts tend to blur together on the monitor screen, making them difficult to read.  Also, use a maximum of 2 or 3 types of standard fonts in one page.  Having too many types of elaborate fonts in a single page will make your website appear amateurish.

Arrange your ads in such a way that it doesn’t overwhelm your webpage.  When visitors visit your site, they don’t really want to read your ads.  In fact, some visitors may be turned off by too many ads crowding in your page.  Also, format your ads in such a way that they are small, and make sure they are relevant to your page and to your readers.  This way, there’s a greater chance for them to click on the ad.
