Validating HTML Code

If you are delving into the coding side of web design, rather than simply using a template to create a serviceable page, you are probably writing your own code, or at least editing or modifying code.

Writing your own code can give you an awesome site, if you get it right. If you get it wrong however, things might not look so rosy.

So how do you make sure your code works, that it does what it is supposed to do, and that your site looks and works the way you want it to? The answer is quite simple. Validate your code.

The advantages of validating your code are varied, some obvious, some not so clear, but here are just a few for you to think about.

Valid Pages are Search Engine Friendly

If you have validated your code, search engines will have a much easier time following your navigation and site map, picking up keywords, and generally understanding your site.

Without validation, search engines may even display sections of code in your search results, leading to fewer visitors for you!

The better a search engine understands your site, at the end of the day, the higher your page rank, and the more visitors you will get.

Valid Code is Correct

Once you’ve validated your code, you know its correct. Not such a big deal you might think, but valid code will usually display correctly, no matter which browser it is viewed on. That should be enough reason right there!

Accessibility

With mobile devices like cell phones and PDA’s being used to access the web, and alternative technologies like screen readers being used by the disabled, valid code becomes even more important.

If your code is not validated, and is incorrect, these devices may have problems displaying your site correctly, if at all.

Correct Code Stays Correct

Because you specify what version of XHTML you are validating your code for, once you’ve validated once, your code stays valid, even when the rest of the world has moved on several versions. Your site will still work in months or years to come, even if the version of XHTML changes.

Picking up Mistakes

Think of it as a lazy way to test. Run your code through a validator, and any error, and the place it occurs, will be picked up. No tedious, time-consuming manual searching and testing.

There you have it: a few very good reasons to validate your code before uploading your site!
