TYPOGRAPHY
Typographic design can represent many things to different people. Of course it is natural that readers and browsers will start at the top left of the page and work their way down a document to the bottom right. Even as they do so, some will prefer work that is arranged in grids, and flowing in consistency. Others will prefer a more liberal approach that is unbound to rules of justification, font size and color. Whatever the case, the intended message must be relayed using best practice in typography.
BOLD
One of the most common typographical features in print and electronic text is bold text. It is universally used to denote headings and subheadings, as well as place emphasis on text. Designers can utilize this feature to attain great successes in providing cues for the introduction of new topics and emphasis on subject matter.
ITALICS
Italics were introduced for purposes of providing emphasis to specific text. Italicized text greatly enhances printed material. However, computer screens do not provide quality view for information that is italicized. The pixilation produces a low quality font output on computer screen. It conflicts with the more natural square pixel grid. If the font size is smaller the output is even worse.
UNDERLINE
Underlining was a technique introduced as a mechanism to give importance. The tactic was later adapted in word processing. But in web design, an underline is supposed to indicate a link. Links are the only logical reason for underlines in web design.
POSITION
A line of type that is in an unusual position will stand out. One of the worst things that can happen in web design is to place a line of text out of sync with the rest of the information. If this is deliberate, it should actually still nicely tie in with the rest of the text and not make reading harder.
COLOR
Color is of absolutely no relevance in print text. In pictures the story is different, but for a white background, black text is the only best choice. There is absolutely no added cost in using colored text on a website. Conversely it can be used effectively to counterbalance typographic limitations.
ORIENTATION
A line of type that runs vertically is easily noticeable on print, but can be difficult to read. All that the reader needs to do is turn the page for horizontal reading. This cannot be performed on a computer screen. Whatever is placed vertically on screen should attract attention, but should not be too long.
SPACING
Line and paragraph spacing impact readership in several ways. For a website, consideration should be made for those who are long sighted. If the information is too jumbled up to fit within the screen, then there is less chance of sustained reading. Besides, there are no design costs associated with the length of the web page compared to print media. Spacing can therefore be used generously to create the desired impact.
Summary
Although there are various programming/coding languages like html and php which are used to code websites, a good web designer must master the use of typography as this is what adds color and style to websites.
