Types of Website Graphics
Even the simplest personal webpage will have some kind of graphic elements, whether they are a logo, buttons, photos or drawings.
If you are designing your own site, it is useful to know what types of graphics are out there, and how and where to best use them:
Navigation buttons
These are graphic elements that are used in lieu of plain text in your navigation menu. They can be simple, or very complex, but, if designed well, they can add to your site’s appeal, and make navigation a little simpler.
Logo
As with your company stationery, your logo is your company’s unique graphic representation. Make sure your logo on your website is crisp and clear. A fuzzy or blurred image is not going to create the right impression!
Bullet points
Small, custom graphics used when creating bulleted lists, instead of the usual boring options. Can add a nifty, and subtle design element if used correctly!
Mastheads
Seen those sites with the image and text combination emblazoned on the top of the page? That is the masthead. It tells visitors which page they are on, and can be a combination of various text, graphics, and even animations. Again, keep it simple, be consistent, and try to limit size (and download time!)
Lines
Either vertical or horizontal, lines separate various sections of your site. They can be simple or ornate, but should always match the overall style and tone of your site.
Text graphics
If you are using fonts for headings that are not commonly found on most computers, it is a good idea to rather save the heading as a graphic, so that it will display as you have designed it.
Photos
The type of site you have will affect the types of photos you upload – ecommerce sites would have product pictures, while company sites may have photos of directors, or even premises. It is entirely up to you, but make sure the photos are high quality!
These are the main types of graphics you can include on your website, however, always bear in mind that continuity and consistency are important when adding graphics. Use the same color palette and buttons throughout for example, and try to use high quality images, while still bearing in mind that graphics slow down loading.
