Types of Spaces Employed in Web Designs

It is not true that you should utilize the whole page when designing a website. You wouldn’t want your viewer to feel suffocated with overt-stuffing of objects, right? Having empty space in your web page is not bad. It actually enhances the elements and overall features of the page. There are three types of spacing that web designers can use: Line Spacing, Whitespace and Padding.

Remember the line breaks in CSS? That employs the concept of line spacing. To make sure that other parts of the text are read, some designers minimize the line spacing. But if you want your viewer to read at a relaxing pace, it would be best to add line spaces. Too little line spacing makes a text seem too crowded, hence discouraging the reader. However, too much space makes the reader lose his focus and be confused on where the next line is, so as much as possible, try to be in the middle of both techniques.

The next concept is Whitespace. Whitespace is commonly called negative space. It is the literal empty space between objects, characters, images and the likes. It is not literally white; it actually depends on the background. It provides the necessary proportion needed. More whitespace usually implies upper scale in the industry. It adds sophistication and elegance. More often, it entails a higher value or price.

The last concept of spaces in web design is padding. This is simply the space between objects that are should not overlap each other. For example, when adding a name for an image, the texts should not be on top of the image itself, but either on the upper portion before the image, or the lower portion after the image. This is a simple concept that tells us of the necessity if space to differentiate and properly pinpoint objects.

Overall, these spacing techniques are ways to improve the readability, usability and ease of understanding of a concept or context included in your website. These matters are not only employed in web designing, but in other physical matters as well. You can check billboard ads, magazines and newspapers and you will see that they all employ these techniques.
