Things that Turn Web Design Customers Off

In what ways can your web design turn your customers off?

When your customer finds that he/she has to do much scrolling while viewing your web page, then chances are that you have a basic web design problem.

One possible cause may be text contents that have long, complex sentences and crowded paragraphs.

Another likely cause is inclusion of too many medium- to large-sized photos arranged vertically on your pages.

When the customer experiences some difficulty getting to the solution he/she expects to find in your site, this is another indication of a web design issue. In all likelihood, the problem has something to do with navigation to various parts of your site.

Navigation is usually via a text menu system. If you observe sites on the web, design of pages includes a menu at the top of the page, at either the left side bar or the right (or both), and at the bottom.

If your web design is such that any of your text menus has too many items on it, or if the items on the menu are not clear to the customer as to their purpose or meaning, then your site is a potential turn-off.

Another problem area that could discourage a customer is this: your pages include graphical buttons and images with links that are supposed to serve as alternative navigation tools, but they are not clearly presented as such.

The customer could not get a clue as to why they are on the page in the first place. The buttons and images can lead the customer to the solution he/she is looking for, but only the web designer knows about it!

An oversight like this may give your customer a reason to surf away from your site.

The problem becomes compounded when the customer miraculously discovers the graphical links in your site through trial and error and perseveres in clicking them, only to realize in the end that the pages they lead to do not have the desired solution after all. Ouch.

Although this is not necessarily a web design problem, but one related to content, it aggravates the customer’s frustration over a design-related issue.
