When working as a web designer, it is important to keep to some basic rules that will help to keep your client happy and your design looking proficient. If your client is happy with your work, then they will be more apt to recommend you to friends and colleagues.

Be sure you know what your client wants. This is often the hardest part of working with a client. Often clients do not know just what they want. They may have an idea pictured in their head, but will not be able to clearly explain it to you.

They will know when they see your design ideas if they are not what they had pictured in their mind. You should ask specific design questions of your client and even provide samples of each type, especially if your client has never worked with a web designer and knows little about the process.

Ask your client if they have any examples of websites that have the same types of elements that they are looking for. This can help you to get a better understanding of what your client is looking for. You can point out changes that can be made to make it uniquely their own.

Always communicate with your client. Whatever the need is, it is vital that you stay in regular communication with your client. Consistent updates are reassuring to the client, and it lets them know that you are working hard to meet their needs

Your client may want a glitzy website, but often times, simplicity will win out. Show the client various versions of your design, from the simplest to the most extreme. Explain to your client why simple is best for the Internet users who will visit their websites. Ultimately you have to go with their design choice.

After the project is done send your client a thank you note and follow up to make sure all is going well. Leave your contact information with them and keep it current.
