Tips on How to Use Graphics in Web Design

Graphics are one element in web design.  The use of graphics can either make or break your website, so one must know some basic rules about the appropriate and proper use of images in websites.
Many people immediately think about graphics and images when they hear the phrase “web design.”  It’s exciting to come across elaborate images, visual effects, or stylistic art when we visit websites.  However, there comes a time when they’re too huge, too slow to load, and simply too flashy and irritating.
That’s why most designers are advised to use graphics sparingly.  Web design is not all about graphics; it’s about communicating something to your visitors.  This could be information or the whole experience of what you’re offering.  To do so, one must use a mix of text and images to properly portray and communicate your purpose, and not just stick to graphics.
Both images and text can do a lot of things for your website.  They can attract attention, express a concept or idea, set the mood, describe product or service offerings, and show your identity as a business entity.
So, when is it OK to use images?

Unless using graphics and images is more effective in delivering your message, you should stick to text.  Text is smaller, easier to make using code, easier to modify, and clearer and more expressive, among many others.
However, there are times when using graphics and images do the job.  After all, as the saying goes, “A picture paints a thousand words.”

If you’re a photographer or an artist, and you’re building a website to showcase your work, obviously you have to use images in your site.  In this case, your content is the image itself, so you’re entitled to use graphics.  Also, if you’re writing a news article, having a relevant photo will support your content.

Graphics are also okay to use if you’re aiming for extra visual impact.  Likewise, if you want your brand to become recognized, you can add graphical logos at a dominant spot to clearly show that the website is an official brand site.

There are other instances when it’s okay to use graphics.  Just remember that before you put images in your page, ask yourself whether it communicates something to your audience, and whether it’s relevant and appropriate.
