Tips for choosing Website Color
The topic of color on the web has been discussed at length, but there are still so many sites that get it wrong! Most professional designers know the golden rules of color, but if you are a new designer, you may need some guidance.
Use Black Backgrounds With Care :
Be warned: black backgrounds are very difficult to pull off! It’s dark and somber, you are limited in terms of font colors, and your site can end up being a threatening and all round unpleasant space to be in!
Limit Your Colors :
It may be tempting to make your site a riot of color. Don’t. Keep it simple, with one or two colors, and various shades and tones of those colors, backed with lots of white!
A good idea, if you really can’t bear to avoid color, is to create a really colorful logo, and keep the rest of your site monochrome. Or choose one colour from your logo, and use only that as an accent. Bottom line is color can be distracting, so use it with care!
Complimentary colors can work well together – these are opposite each other on the color wheel – but can be a problem for color blind users. Colors from the same family also work well together, for example, cold colors like green, turquoise and blue, or hot colors like yellow, orange and red. Use them as accents though – overdoing it can be overpowering!
Naturally Occurring Color Schemes :
Nature rarely gets it wrong! Think of a ladybug – red and black – really good combination! Or look at flowers, and their colors – many are more than one colour, but it always seems to work! If in doubt, look for a natural color scheme that you can “borrow” for your site.
Whatever your final choice in color is, and whatever you base that choice on, remember subtlety is key, keep it simple, include loads of white space and use color as an accent.
Color is only one of the tools we have available to us when developing a website, but because it is instantly noticeable, it can be a powerful one. When in doubt, err on the side of caution, or have trusted critics review your proposed combinations. What looks great to you might not be the best choice!
