Targeting Customers: A Good Web Design Can Help
Determining a target audience is a major step in planning a website. If a website already exists, but is not drawing customers as planned, improperly targeting an audience could be part of the reason. No one wants to visit a law firm’s website with garish primary colors. No one wants to browse a technology site with outdated graphics and navigation. There are several ways to make sure an audience is properly targeted.
First, the design must be oriented to the type of audience the site is intended to reach. An audience which consists of businesspeople or professionals such as lawyers must fit their purposes for the site. Animated graphics, bright colors or other childish features will immediately put off a professional crowd. The site must reflect the mentality of those who are targeted.
The site must also be relevant to the skill set of the target audience. A site directed toward the elderly would benefit from scalable text and sound cues for those with impaired senses. In addition, they will likely not be incredibly tech-savvy, meaning an innovative navigation system would provide nothing more than a source of frustration. On the other hand, a site intended to draw young web designers must be cutting-edge. The audience would not be interested in already-proven design, but new and innovative ideas.
Another consideration for a target audience is what technology they have access to. Certain demographics are less likely to have software for java applets or Flash animations. Rather than requiring the target audience download extras in order to view the site, it is far more effective to accommodate the audience and completely avoid using the software entirely. However, if the audience is sure to have the software, it can be advantageous to utilize the more advanced web design possibilities.
The success of targeting an audience depends on many factors. However, most of these factors are common sense. If the time is taken to address the basic needs of the expected site-viewers, there is a good chance that a natural progression will take the site in the right direction. But as with any site, one must be sure to keep the audience in mind. They, not the designers, are the ones who will be visiting the site and paying for the businesses products.
