Getting Started on Basic Web Design

When learning about basic web design, it’s not just enough to know about the codes and HTML tags.  You also have to look at the aesthetics and the design of your website.

When getting started on basic web design, the first step is to study other websites and go over their source code.  You can do this through using the “View Source” option when you right-click a webpage.  This is a very good way to learn new HTML tricks and techniques.  You can then study the codes and apply what you learned by copying the codes into your own.  Keep in mind that you can only do this for study and practice purposes, and never attempt to copy codes that took the original writer a lot of time and effort to make.

Don’t rely on WYSIWYG or What You See Is What You Get.  These are HTML editors that let you build with graphics to represent what you’re actually coding.  One popular example of this is Dream Weaver.  Instead of relying on this, try hand coding using NotePad.  This way, you can practice your codes and get used to spotting errors.  Also, you can have more control over the web design.

Learning CSS is an important step for every budding webmaster.  It allows you to modify the whole look of the site just by editing a single file, and allows you to layout and arrange your pages to look very professional and first rate.

Presentation or the actual layout of the website is very crucial as well.  Use tables, frames, or layers to arrange your site.  Make sure navigation links are well placed, as well as supplementary boxes and the content.  As much as possible, have pages that don’t require as much scrolling down.  Maximize the use of horizontal space by putting navigation links side by side, and using inset pictures to allow for the content to flow together with it.

Forgo elaborate fonts and stick two or three classic fonts for your whole site.  Too much fonts in a single page could look messy and disorganized, so don’t get carried away.  Color is also something to look into, and make sure the foreground contrasts with the background.
