Are Spiders Crawling Your Website?
Even the most perfect websites design is useless unless its “crawl-able” by the search engines. Search engines like Yahoo and Google “crawl” the web using tools called “spiders” that basically index the entire content of the Internet. Search engine spiders look at the content of your website’s text. While your content should be written to appeal to the visitors that come to your website, you should also pay careful attention to the search engine optimization of your content to make sure that the search engine spiders are pleased as well – to get the best page ranking possible.
So, how do you make your website’s content both user and spider-friendly? You should:
• Make certain that the top of each web page on your website or the first few sentences of your article has a clear purpose. Your three most important keywords should be in the first two – three sentences. Although some search engines will use the meta-tag site description when crawling the web, some will use the first bit of content on each page or article.
• Spiders cannot index pages that they can’t crawl, so having a site map page makes it easier for the search engine spiders to find the important pages on your site. The site map also allows the spider to understand the importance of each page. Keep your site’s links limited to 75-100 maximum to avoid spider confusion.
• When you are creating anchor text that links internal pages on your website, use your keywords as opposed to “click here”. Spiders can read anchor text as well.
• Keep your URL as simple as possible, but keyword rich. Avoid “over-hyphenating” your URL because it can be interpreted as spam, but use hyphens instead of underscores.
• Write unique product descriptions for commonly sold items to set you apart from the competition. Use keywords of actual words that people searching to buy your item might use. A great way to find out what keywords are being used is to use a keyword search service – it costs very little and will show you the number of hits on your chosen keywords over the past year.
