A Solution to Resolutions in Website Design
Resolution in Website Design can refer to two things. It can either be the screen resolution or image resolution. Either which both are critical elements for website scalability.
Screen Resolution – is always being pertained as the screen size, or the number of pixels that are displayed on the screen at any time. The minimum resolution on most PCs and laptops is a width of 800 * 600; however, the most popular screen resolution used by most users is 1024*768 widths. It is next to impossible to design a website that is a fit for all browsers, platforms and screen resolution. The best approach therefore, is to adopt a tableless layout with % widths that expand and contract depending on the visitor’s browser settings. Subjecting your visitors to inconvenience by constant horizontal scrolling will definitely drive them away from your site. Elements such as navigation structures, response forms and content are vital elements that need to be considered when designing with the right screen resolution in mind.
Image Resolution – An image’s overall resolution is equivalent to its pixel dimension and spatial resolution. Simply put, an image resolution is measured by the number of pixels or dots per the unit of printed size in the image. Most computer monitors display a maximum of 72 dpi (dots per inch) while print images require a minimum of 300 dpi. To deduce, the more pixels there are in an image, the more quality the image can be displayed with and vice versa. Although determining the image resolution for a printed output is somewhat different. There are different technical requirements needed in designing for a wide range of media. Images from the web when printed out will appear smaller than expected and less defined. So to create images across several media, for print usage the image should be at 300dpi and then lower them down for desktop printers and websites.
A professional website designer’s solution to this is to design the web page with the highest resolution that users will have. Using percentages instead of exact pixel measurements should be used for specifying table width.
