Sketching the Outlook of a Web Site
This phase of web design comes after the construction of the site map. It involves the design of the page frequently referred to as the home page although in actual reality it could serve as the template. It is the look that all the web pages on the site will take. This sketch may also be done on paper with the aid of a pencil that one can easily erase due to the unlimited number of corrections that may need to be done.
There are various ways of starting the sketch although a simple layout could do. The kind of interface should be an appealing one thus communicating the right tone to prospective users. Different shapes are permitted for the outlook. The choice of shape may depend on the designer’s personal interests as well as on the client instructions. The topic or theme on which the site is based could also play a role in deciding on the outlook.
The web designer must make sure to include various features on the sketch. The page must be defined in terms of size and structure. The home page contents must be included. These will mainly revolve around navigation tools, titles and links that could lead to different pages. One can start off by providing the general sections and gradually work down into the finer details.
It is necessary to include features that one would on the web page of any other site. These global navigation tools include log in and log out buttons. The site map could also be included here as should the help option. The web site must have a footer navigation that could have fewer options as opposed to the header navigation. Some designers usually opt to include the Contact Us option in the footer navigation. This goes down to personal preferences hence the designer must not be under any obligation to place it there.
The designer must partition the space adequately, taking care to assign enough space for all features. Furthermore, one should maintain a balance between the space that is covered and that which is left out of use. While it is not necessary to label, the designer should assign all the key areas of the page in a manner that allows easy navigation. This will also enhance the look of the web page and serve to attract more users to the site.
Where it happens that the site features some graphics, it is essential to position all the graphics correctly. The ratio of space utilized and that remaining free should not amount to an awkward figure. The choice of graphics must be given more attention to ensure that they are in tune with the content and all the other features on the page.
The web page needs to come out in a centered position on the paper or screen. There should be clear distinction of where the content is starting and the direction in which it is headed. While visualizing the web page, one must also remember what details will be included on the actual web site but may not feature on the sketch. The sketch does not be need to be perfect but only must perform the task of ensuring that designer has a visual image of what they are aiming to achieve.
