Show Off your Web Design Skills on Your Portfolio

The main goal of portfolios is to show what you can do as a web designer. It does not matter if you are working for a firm in Los Angeles or in small suburban town. All that matters is that you are a good designer and that you have vision. If you are eyeing a dream job or trying to get more clients for your side jobs as a web designer, then maybe you should rethink of your strategy in marketing yourself and your web design services.

A corporate job usually requires you to show off your technical skills in using and manipulating software to create something beautiful. What future employers look for in a web designer is a balance of both creativity and technical skill. In fact, they would prioritize skill over creativity since the company already has existing standards on how to do certain things involving their websites or web pages. They do need people who think out of the box but they do not really want to hire someone who is too out there or outlandish. With this in mind, create your portfolio in such a way that it lets your future employers know what you can do as a designer.

On the other hand, there is usually more creative freedom when you get to work freelance with different clients. Aside from the fact that you are not really tied down to just one project, you and your client can brainstorm on ideas and concepts that would otherwise be dismissed in a corporate setup. When presenting clients with your portfolio, you should highlight your range as a web designer. Let your clients know that you have worked and collaborated with a lot of people and businesses and helped them create a nice looking website. Letting your potential client know that many people have hired you as a freelancer puts their mind at ease. If they see a lot of names and businesses on your portfolio, then they are likely to jump in the bandwagon and hire you. Try to keep your creativity from getting the better of you and do not shock clients with out of these world ideas.
