How to Shift From Print to the Web

While both are visual and audience oriented, there are a lot of differences between print media and online media, specifically web design. A magazine appears the same way in Los Angeles as it does in New York City but a website or a web page may look different when viewed from different computers or when you use a different operating system. One main difference is that in web design, you get precision and accuracy when you execute a design idea through CSS. In print, however, such accuracy is not present. Web design is reliant on specific instructions but print media does not have the same rigidity.

As a designer, portfolios are very important especially if you are trying to land new clients. If you will be presenting your portfolio in print form, you should understand that it would not have the same impact as it does on a website or a webpage. Your web design skills may not translate very well on printed materials.

If your customers see a printed copy of your design you need to be direct and tell them that changing things online have implications such as download speed as well as the way they look on different computers or operating systems. While adjusting the size and placement of a text on a webpage may look better on print, downloading this information from a site or page may make it look different and may create imbalance in the overall web design.

You should also take important caution in matching operating systems, browsers, and computers. While print translates design easily, it is not the same with web design.

Above all else, you should familiarize yourself with your audience. The readers of print media may have different preferences and tastes from those who browse through web sites or web pages. Aside from knowing these differences, know what the audience wants, especially those who are your web audience. Propellor heads usually browse sites and pages with Unix while using a 21-inch computer monitor. If you know how your audiences view sites and which operating systems, browsers, and computers they use, you would have an idea on how to design your site according to their tastes.
