Setting a Price for Your Web Design Project
If you’re new to becoming a freelance web designer, one thing to think about is setting the fee to charge for your projects. Because you are performing a service for your clients, pricing is more difficult to pin down. You have to take certain things into consideration in order to come up with an appropriate fee.
First of all, ask yourself what the project entails. Identify how small or large the project is going to be, and how many web pages are required to build it. Another thing to look into is if your client already has a desired design in mind. Will you be using images or design templates given to you, or will you be left to handle all those things on your own?
Also determine whether or not it will incorporate Flash, animation, or other multimedia, as well as some scripting and programming. You can also ask your client whether he or she’ll be the one to provide the necessary content, or whether you’ll be the one responsible for it.
The price you’re going to charge will depend on the answers to the items above. Of course, if you’re expected to come up with more work that includes several web pages, content writing, multimedia, and programming, you can charge a higher fee.
Other factors also come into play when setting up a price for web designing projects. If your client is in need of an urgent project to be completed within a shorter time frame, then you can charge more. But of course, make sure you’ll be able to accomplish and deliver your work within the allowable schedule.
Your work experience also affects your pricing. If you’ve had a lot of web design experience up your sleeve, you can charge more. Clients expect to pay a lot more especially if you are already skilled with web designing. However, this does not mean you can charge high prices for your five years of HTML coding when in fact your clients want a flash-based site, which you are not yet quite adept at.
Think long-run. Will it be a site that will require constant maintenance? Will you be the one to update the site, or will a third-party to do the job? If the client wants you to handle this, you may also get a whole other contract for the maintenance of their site.
Check with the norms. Ask your web designer friends about what the usual going rate is, and visit forums and other places where you can get an idea of how much other web designers charge.
