SEO and Web Design – What You Need to Know

When you design a website for your business or even a personal page, the ultimate goal is to have as many visitors as possible.

That is why we hear so much about page ranking, which is where your page is one of the top results of a search on Google or Yahoo. However, getting there can be tricky – it is a bit of a vicious circle really – the higher your page rank, the more visitors you will have, but on the other hand, the more visitors you get, the higher your page rank!

This is where SEO (Search Engine Optimization) comes in. It’s a group of practices designed to make your site more visible to search engines and their crawlers, and the more your page is visited by crawlers, the higher your rank will be. Here are a few ways to do this:

  • First and foremost, set your keywords and metatags – make sure they’re popular search terms, and remember, you can use search phrases to, so instead of using “tomatoes” use “tomatoes recipes” or “how to grow tomatoes.” It has been proven that key phrases up your search response rate.
  • The next step is to get some really great content on your site, and update it regularly. Search engines like sites that have regular updates and changes.
  • You also need to verify and submit your site to most search engines – on Google, this is done using the webmaster tools, and by pasting html code on your site. Smaller search engines are also valuable, and there are free packages available, whereby you can submit your site to many at the same time!
  • Another great way to up your page rank is to link to other sites, and have them link to you. In and outbound links increase the number of times your site is indexed by the search engines, and, by the same token, your page rank.
  • Last, but not least, is promotion. Build a buzz around your site and drive traffic to it! If you are selling a product, list your site with affiliate marketing sites like Clickbank, or try article marketing, or press releases. Comment on forums and blogs, as this also provides an opportunity to both get involved, and to increase your page rank.

When designing your site, it is good to keep in mind that the work does not stop here! You still need to market your site, and increase your traffic, and bearing that in mind from day one can help a lot when the marketing effort starts!
