Using SEO to Improve Your Business Website

SEO or search engine optimization is the process of making your website more readily visible to search engines like Yahoo and Google.  The following SEO tips and hints can help you in your efforts to get a larger volume of traffic coming through your site:

Provide unique, well-written content on your website that is updated regularly.  Focus your content on your primary keyword or keyword phrase.
Using your keyword or keyword phrase as the link, build a good network of quality backlinks.
Use a unique keyword title tag on each page of your website.  If your company name must be included, put it at the end – most businesses (unless you are a major business) won’t get lots of searches in the search engines based on name alone.
Links to your site and within your site should use your keyword or keyword phrase.  In lieu of a ‘click here’ link, choose ‘your keyword phrase’ instead.
Keyword phrases will give you more results than single keywords.
Add your location to your keyword phrase to be picked up in local searches; for example “New York plumbing company”.
Focus more on the content of your site in terms of text, rather than images or Flash.  Spiders crawl text, but they don’t crawl your videos or images.
Don’t concern yourself over you’re the file extension of your URL.  Extensions like .html, .htm, .php. and .asp are viewed alike for SEO purposes.
Get your site indexed with the search engines faster by linking from other quality sites.  Getting indexed through regular submissions can literally take weeks.
If your content does not change often, then add a blog to your website.  For optimal SEO, your blog content (added at least three times weekly) will provide the search engine spiders the “fresh meat” they must have to adequately index your website.
Don’t overstuff your content with keywords. An abnormally high amount of keyword content will have a negative effect on your page ranking.
Are you sharing a server? Check to make sure you’re not on a proxy with a website that has been banned or with a spammer.  This can affect the rankings for your website.
