What is Search Engine Crawling?

“Spidering” or “Search Engine Crawling” is the process by which a search engine’s program visits your site, reading all the pages through the links within your website.  This process takes note of all the words that are used on the web pages which can then be used in finding these pages when anyone tries to search for the keywords using the search engine.

Search engine crawling help your web pages get located by search engines once a user tries to inquire about the topic related to the contents of your site.  When looking up something, a user normally enters one or more words or phrases on a search engine such as Google, Yahoo or MSN.

Search engine crawling is simpler than you have imagined, which requires complex algorithm to get it to work.  Being an end user is normally way easier than doing the hard work to make the search engine work in sorting out the billions of data encrypted in the world wide web.

Let’s take a look at search engine crawling employed by Google search.  Google uses a program called GoogleBot, which primarily functions to read each page through the links within your website.  GoogleBot will make use of the words that are in your pages which can be the mechanism which will make it visible to Google search engine when someone makes a query on that topic.

Other search engines also employ a similar search engine crawling concept on other “robot” programs.  Such “robot” would then pass the information it gathered from you website to another part of the software that will analyze the contents and phrases which will then be added to the search index.

In the context of search engine crawling, search index is a very important concept.  Search engines periodically update their index for key words and phrases that are searched by users.

Indexing is similar to adding a phone number to your mobile phone directory.  By adding key words to Google key words, for example, you are linking a keyword to your web pages such that Google search engine will be able to locate your website as an address where user can find information about a specific word or phrase.
